A Tribute To A Legend....Malaysian Vasudevan

Malaysia Vasudevan was one of the prime singers of the 80s and 90s Tamil cinema. His versatility as a singer was proved very soon after he took up singing as his career in the early 70s. But you will be surprised to learn that the celebrated singer actually wanted to be an actor when he landed in India from Malaysia.

Vasudevan’s parents were from Palakkad. In the early years of the last century Chattu Nair of Ottappalam, Ammalu of Polpulli along with their respective families migrated to Malaysia in search of livelihood. They became labourers in the rubber estates of Klang Valley. After a few years Chattu Nair and Ammalu became husband and wife in an arranged marriage. Vasudevan was born on June 15, 1944 as their eighth child. His surroundings in Malaysia were predominantly Tamil and his life was lived in Tamil, at school and at home.
Chattu Nair was musically inclined and all his children grew with a natural ability to sing and appreciate music. Malaysia Vasudevan had once said that all his family members, except his mother Ammalu, were singers. He first started learning music from his father and later on, his brother taught him. Vasudevan started singing on stage when he was eight. And yes he was interested in acting too.

When Vasudevan grew up he got attached to Tamil drama troupes in Malaysia as an actor and singer. The producers of one of his plays ‘Ratha Paei’ wanted to make it as a film. Vasudevan came with the group to Chennai and acted in the film `Raththa Paei’. He even sang a song for the film under the baton of G.K. Venkatesh for whom Ilaiyaraja was working as the assistant..

His first major song was in the film `Delhi to Madras' that starred Jaishankar and Srividya. It was a comedy song ‘Paalu Vikkira Padma Un Paalu Romba Suthhama? for the music director V. Kumar. This chance was possible because of his friendship with the film’s producer Pollachi Rathnam. After that he joined Pavalar Brothers troupe which was run by Ilaiyaraja and his brothers.

During a stage performance, music director MSV heard Vasudevan and gave him a small piece of a song in `Bharatha Vilas' (he sang for the Punjabi in ‘Indhiya Naadu En Veedu’) and then a song in `Thalai Prasavam'. The first big break came when Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan made him sing ‘Kaalam Seyyum Vilaiyattu’ in `Kumasthavin Magal'. Vasudevan was rechristened Malaysia Vasudevan by AP Nagarajan in this film.

Later when his good friend Illayaraja stormed the Tamil film industry with `Annakili', he was made to sing in Annakili and after `Aattukutti Muttai Ittu' from `16 Vayathinile’ happened, Malaysia Vasudevan never looked back. Illayaraja backed him until he became a star singer.

Malaysia Vasudevan has sung close to 8000 songs in his three decades of active career out of which most are for Illayaraja. Illayaraja made Malaysia Vasudevan sing songs of all kinds and genre. Every song Malaysia Vasudevan rendered with utmost sincerity and surprised everyone with the range he had.

Soft romantic songs like ‘Indha Minminikku’(Sigappu Rojakkal), ‘Vaan Megangalay’ (Puthiya Vaarpukal), ‘Malargale Nadha Swarangal’ (Kizhake Pogum Rayil), ‘Malargalilay Aaraadhanai’(Karumbu Vil), ‘Kodai Kaala Kaatray’(Panneer Pushpangal), ‘Poove Ilaya Poove’ (Kozhi Koovuthu) Thangachangili Minnum Painkili (Thooral Nindru Pochhu), etc must be some of the timeless favourites of Tamil film music lovers.

Even under the baton of the maestro MS Viswanathan, Malaysia Vasudevan had sung many illustrious songs. ‘Ezhudhugiral Oru Pudhukkavithai’ (Saranaalayam),‘Enniyirundhadhu Eadera’ (Andha 7 Naatkal) and the super duper hits from ‘Billa’ are just a few rare gems.

Sensuous songs like ‘Kanna Thorakkanum Saami’, ‘or ‘Nila Kaayudhu’ and Emotional songs like ‘Oru Thanga Rathathhil’(Dharma Yudhham), ‘Allithhandha Bhoomi Annai Allava’(Nandu), ‘Adi Aadu Poongodiye (Kali), ‘Vaa Vaa Vasanthamey (Puthu Kavithai), ‘Pattuvanna Rosavam’ (Kannipparuvathile) Ponmaana thedi naanum poovodu (Enga oor Rasathi) all came easy to Vasudevan and succeeded in showing some other brilliant facets of the wonderful singer. His largely folksy tunes sung for Shankar Ganesh are also of inimitable class.

Some of the best songs of Malaysia Vasudevan happened at the time when he was considered the voices of Sivaji Ganesan and Rajinikanth. Who can forget the songs of ‘Mudhal Mariyathai’ which were rendered with a rare spirit of genius? And for the Super Star? From Pothuvaga en mansu thangam (Murattukalai) to Aasai Nooru vagai (Adutha Varisu) to many others and there are too many.

Malaysia Vasudevan is like TMS who was content with the popularity achieved only in Tamil. He was of the notion that to sing in other languages he should have known well the nuances of other languages. At a time when not knowing the language is the first preferred criterion to sing in Tamil, Malaysia Vasudevan’s resolve may sound funny to many today.

This tribute has not touched Malaysia Vasudevan’s acting career simply because he is first a glorious singer. However he will feature in the history of Tamil cinema as a versatile actor too. His acting career that started with ‘Oru Kaithiyin Diary’ and flourished through the late 80s and 90s is a memorable one.

Malaysia Vasudevan, an iconic singer of the 80s and 90s is no more. The renowned singer passed away in Chennai on Sunday February 20, 2011 after a brief illness. He was 66.

Budak Interlok is deeply sorrowed by the passing away of the legend and prays for his soul to rest in peace. We’ll miss you sir.

HRP vows to continue with its protest on 27Feb2011

Human Rights Party (HRP) will still carry on with their ‘People’s March in Solidarity Against Umno’s Racism’ on Feb 27, despite the crackdown last weekend.

Last Sunday, the police detained nationwide at least 59 people travelling Hindraf convoys with allegations rough treatment by police.

“We are sticking to the plan and there is no turning back,” HRP information chief S Jayathas told Malaysiakini when contacted today.

He said that the march would be neither postponed nor cancelled because Article 10 of the federal constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression.

He also said that there are no changes of plans and that the meeting point will still remain KLCC.

NONE“I call for all, everyone who thinks that Umno is racist and if they really want to make a difference. A change in Malaysia,” Jayathas (left) added.

Action plans all laid out
HRP will be holding several forums on ‘Interlok’ in major cities before the march and leaflets are still being distributed nationwide.

On any response from Inspector General Police Ismail Omar regarding their application for a police permit submitted on Feb 11, Jayathas said:

“No, we have not heard from the IGP yet. But we do know that on the scheduled day, there will be other agents that will provoke us,” he said.

On the ‘Interlok’ novel Jayathas said HRP will take the issue to the United Nations on Tuesday .

Clash of differing perceptions

NONEThe issue first broke out at the end of last year when Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department T Murugiah protested against ‘Interlok’ after his ministry had discussed the novel with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

The MIC had also called for change the work before the book is used as a literature textbook, as it contains a chapter offensive to Indians.

Indian NGOs decry the book’s description of Indians in Malaysia as being from the lower caste, among other racial stereotypes.

Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had announced on Jan 27 that the novel will remain as the textbook for the literature component of the Bahasa Malaysia subject for Form Five, but with amendments to those parts deemed offensive to the Indian community.

There has been endless protest since then.

BESTINO GOLDEN HOUSE STORY

IPOH: An Ipoh-based company, Bestino Group Bhd, which was raided by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the Securities Commission (SC) in June last year on suspicion of illegal deposit-taking, may be a front for the “biggest money-laundering” operations in the country, according to Buntong assemblyman A Sivasubramaniam.
Despite the BNM and SC raids last year,  there were still unanswered questions involving the missing millions invested by Malaysians, in particular those in Perak, he said.
Sivasubramaniam is urging Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to immediately step in and order a police investigation into Bestino Group.
“We want the prime minister to order an investigation… millions have been lost.
“I believe  this is one of the biggest illegal money-laundering operations in the country.
“I urge the federal government to take investors’ complaints seriously,” he said, adding that the Perak opposition parlimentarians planned to bring up the issue at the next parliamentary sitting.
Meanwhile, the BNM raids, which were widely reported in the Tamil media but received scant attention from others, has forced Bestino to keep a low profile.
FMT, which visited the Bestino circle in Ipoh, discovered that the company is allegedly still active and had thrived on recommendations and word-of-mouth marketing.
Gold mines
Bestino Group, which lists “gold” as its nature of work, however, only became a buzzword after BNM raided its premises last June for alleged money laundering.
Bestino had reportedly collected more than RM400 million from the public comprising mainly Indians since it began operations.
Bestino’s leading figure has been the well-known Batu Pahat jeweller Chong Yuk Ming. Chong is also a director in Bestino, which was previously known as Bestino Golden House Sdn Bhd, set up in 2006.
In 2007, the company allegedly recruited former assistant superintendent of police (ASP) V Krishnan and ex-BNM officer S Balachandran to recruit Indian investors.
According to some investors, Krishnan and Balachandran told them that Bestino had purchased 14 gold mines in Papua New Guinea and that they could see a 36% dividend on a RM10,000 investment.
In 2008, the company changed its name to Bestino Group Bhd and Krishnan was appointed as director in the new company while Balachandran allegedly became the key “link” between BNM and Bestino.
On record, Bestino has nearly 6,800 investors who have invested a total of RM400 million in Bestino, within three years of setting up business. However, this does not include the gold that the investors re-invested in Bestino totalling RM300 million.
A few were sceptical about the “investments” because investors were offered a 36% dividend on their first RM10,000 investment and gold “biscuits” worth RM7,000 for free.
It was to Bestino’s advantage that it had Chong and prominent individuals like MIC Perak state secretary Jayagopi and a former army sergeant, Haridass and MP N Gobalakrishnan’s brother N Loganathan, vouching for the company and encouraging the public to invest in it.
Money laundering
According to an investor Nalluran, 74, a pensioner from the Perak Water Board, he invested RM20,000 because he “believed” in Chong’s involvement.
“He is a well-known man here; everybody knows Batu Pahat goldsmith Chong.”
Explaining the investment, Nalluran said: “At the start, they (Bestino) bank in dividends in our accounts every month.
“After one year, they threw us a new offer. They said if we gave back the gold which Bestino had given us, then they would be ready to give us 60% dividend per annum.
“After a year we were confident of them and accepted the offer. But after a few months everything went wrong,” he said.
However, Chong had sent out letters to investors assuring them they would get back their investments within three months and asked them to be patient.
Nalluran, however, was unaware of BNM’s raid on Bestino on June 16 last year.
BNM and the SC had reportedly commenced investigations into the Bestino Group and its related companies on suspicion of illegal money laundering.
In a joint statement, the central bank and the SC had reportedly said the company was in breach of subsection 25(1) of the Banking and Financial Institutions Act 1989 (BAFIA) and the offering for subscription or purchase of preference shares in breach of section 212(2) of the
Capital Markets and Services Act 2007.
Following complaints from the public, BNM and SC raided Bestino Group and its related companies in Ipoh, Perak and Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
High-stake gambling
Meanwhile, former PKR secretary-general PS Jenapala finds the whole Bestino scam frustrating. He claimed that Ipoh had become a nest for illegal operations.
“Ipoh seems to be the focus of illegal activities. First, we had the Fresh Farm scam, and now Bestino,” said Jenapala, who is now the pro tem president of the  Indian Justice Party (IJP).
Jenapala was alluding to the recent Ipoh High Court ruling last week ordering Fresh Farm Bhd, which began operations in Ipoh three years ago, to pay RM26 million to its predominantly Indian investors. Fresh Farm reportedly had 2,000 members participating in its scheme.
According to Jenapala, there was no truth in Bestino’s claim that it had mines in Papua New Guinea and bought its gold from there.
“There are rumours that Bestino is gambling people investments in Macau and that a huge amount of money is stuck in Macau.
“When the BNM raided them here, they only managed to seize RM14 million, which is a small portion of the total investments.
“This raises the question: who’s holding the rest of the money?”
To a question on why the police were slow to react to public complaints, Jenapal said: “Almost 70% of Bestino’s agents are from the police force.
“Do you believe the police will push for a probe? I doubt it.
“If the government continues to remain silent on this issue, it will be another Maika Holdings scandal,” he said.

No let-up in Interlok protests

HRP will continue to pile the pressure on the BN government until the controversial book is withdrawn from the education system.
IPOH: The Human Rights Party Malaysia (HRP) is not letting up the political pressure on the Barisan Nasional (BN) government to remove the controversial Form Five Malay literature book “Interlok” from the education system.
It has drawn up programmes to continue with its people’s power protests to demonstrate to the government that the Indian community is dead set against the book.
Certain portions of the book were deemed to have offended the sentiments of the Indian community with their alleged racist attack.
Although Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had responded to the vocal protest of the community by removing the offending sections, he stopped short of removing the book from the education system.
Even though MIC seems to support Muhyiddin’s move, the Indian community, NGOs and HRP were not prepared to compromise.
On Feb 13, HRP ignited the first spark of protest by organising a nationwide march – in the form of car convoys – against the novel.
The convoys started in various states, with each convoy ending in another destination in the respective states.
The peaceful protest ended with the arrest of some 75 activists in the various states, some of whom were later released.
The next anti-Interlok move is fixed for Feb 19 when HRP pro-tem secretary-general P Uthayakumar and its pro-tem chief W Sambulingam are set to address the Indian residents of Buntong, Perak, which has the highest number of Indian voters in the country.
This “Haramkan Interlok” function is to be held at Dewan Arioli Manram at 7pm and a huge Indian crowd is expected to turn up.

Biggest rally

The final and biggest rally called “People’s march for solidarity against Umno/BN racism” is slated to take place at the KLCC on Feb 27.
This event is expected to attract a mammoth gathering similar to the Nov 27, 2007 Hindraf protest which changed the political landscape of the country.
Ironically, Interlok, written by national laureate Abdullah Hussain in 1971, was to promote better racial understanding.
But it backfired as the Indian community took offence to the word “pariah” used to describe them and other alleged factual errors about their way of life.
According to HRP Perak chief P Ramesh, there are three different types of Form Five Malay literature books, of which one will be chosen by each of the three zones – northern, central and southern.
The northern zone, comprising the states in the north, is using the “Kembara Amira” Malay literature book. The central zone, comprising Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor and Negri Sembilan, is using Interlok.
Ramesh, however, cannot remember the title of the Malay literature book used in Form Five for the southern region.
He contended that since Interlok was not used nationwide but only in a limited area, it would be easy to remove it completely from the education system.
“Why can’t the schools in the central zone use one of the other two titles for Malay literature instead of this controversial book?” he asked.
He said it was not practical to remove the offending portions of the book as this would disrupt the the smooth flow of the story. Thus, the best alternative is to withdraw it.
Meanwhile, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said in a press statement the BN government should not press any charges against the HRP and Hindraf protesters who took part in the convoy protest.
PAKATAN RAKYAT snatches traditional Indian reserve seats

Note: It was an utter disappointment when even the supposedly multi-racial PKR, DAP and PAS “snatched up” these “Indian reserve seats” granted to the MIC by UMNO as was agreed to upon by our forefathers) by fielding non Indian candidates in these MIC seats. I have personally made this request in writing to the top most leaders of PKR, DAP and PAS in the 1999 general elections, in the subsequent Teluk Kemang, Lunas and Ijok by elections, 2004 general elections and finally in the 2008 general elections for the need to put up Indian Opposition candidates in these MIC constituencies to at least maintain the status quo but to no avail. Even from the confines of my Kemta Prison walls I wrote and hand delivered to PKR, DAP and PAS leaders Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Kit Siang and Hadi Awang that in the 2008 general elections all MIC seats must be contested by Opposition Indian candidates but they too took advantage of the fact that these MIC seats are all not Indian but Malay majority seats and therefore fielded mostly Malay and some Chinese candidates. We would not have taken this objection had PKR, DAP and PAS
taken up at least the most critical Indian issues seriously which omission over the last fifty two years had in fact contributed to the present critical state of affairs having befallen on the Indian community.

HRP presentation by Dr.Paraman, Manifesto Committee Head at PKR, DAP, PAS, PSM & PRM round table Conference (16/2/2011).

My name is Dr Paraman. I am a Malaysian. I come here representing Mr Uthayakumar of The Human Rights Party of Malaysia.
We have come this morning as a friend of Pakatan Rakyat and as true friends, we shall only say what we feel  will truly benefit the people of this nation in the next General Elections. We have not come here to be apple polishers.
The invitation letter states that ‘the 13th GE, memberi peluang terbaik untuk Pakatan Rakyat mengambil alih pemerintahan negara’.
‘Namun demikian, kebelakangan ini terdapat pelbagai kenyataan yang menonjolkan sifat-sifat Kuasa Ketiga (The Third Force). Sudah pastinya kewujudan suatu kuasa ketiga ini boleh membawa padah kepada perjuangan rakyat yang menuntut pertukaran kerajaan BN kepada PR’. Meaning that there are some out there who will be acting as spoilers to the perjuangan rakyat.
Now, lets not get carried away . Pakatan Rakyat managed to get 3.79 million votes in the last GE, out of 10.74 million people who voted from a total of 15.2 million Malaysians who are eligible to vote. That too with the help of numerous organizations in this country, some of which are present today.
With all due respect, 3.8 out of 15 million votes does not constitute ‘perjuangan rakyat’.  What does that then make the 4 million votes that BN won ??

Also Pakatan Rakyat hanya adalah pakatan di antara DAP, PAS dan PKR and perhaps PSM juga dan bukanlah pakatan antara semua golongan atau lapisan rakyat.
Let us accept as a fact for debate that the people want a change from being governed by BN. That does not entitle Pakatan Rakyat to say that, they are the only ones that have the legitimate right to fight for this change. No individual, political party or organization in this country has the absolute right, or will ever have the right, to say that only they can decide who can or cannot battle for the hearts of the voters, and the future of the nation.

The only right that any political party has, is to decide who they pick as their allies, and who they will consider as their opponents. And that will be something that Pakatan Rakyat will have to consider very seriously before the next GE, if they truly want to have any chance at all of capturing Putrajaya.
The letter also states, ‘Semua ahli panel juga diseru memfokuskan kepada isu pokok iaitu bagaimana hendak menewaskan BN’.

So we are here to discuss how Pakatan Rakyat can defeat BN in the next GE. The answer is simple, that is by getting way more than the 3.8 million votes that Pakatan Rakyat won the last time.
To be safe, let us just say that Pakatan Rakyat will need in excess of 5 million votes to win Putrajaya.
Now,  how can they do this?

We all know that UMNO and its thousand odd warlords are the real political masters of this country. But these thousand odd warlords need the help of their boys in MCA , MIC and Gerakan as well as all those other pro BN parties to win enough votes to stay in power. Without these lackeys, the UMNO warlords will not be able to even win a hamper at a lucky draw.
Can DAP, PAS and PKR  say that they have the ability and resources to battle all 17 BN component parties, to reach the entire voter spectrum, to ensure that they will be able to get into the homes and hearts of every red blooded voter out there and say that we represent your dreams for this great country ? Can you ?
Can Pakatan Rakyat even guarantee, as things stand today, that they will be able to at least match the 3.8 million votes that they won the last term, if the elections were called tomorrow ?

It cannot be denied that the political picture has become muddled and chaotic, and that BN has to a certain extent regained some measure of the support they lost in the last GE. Can Pakatan Rakyat stop this slide, and make themselves once again the best choice for the voters out there?
If things were indeed going according to track, we will not be here today, having this discussion would we ?
The only reason there is a rise of new players, who are anti BN, and yet not a part of Pakatan Rakyat,  is because there are voters out there who have lost some measure of faith in Pakatan Rakyat as being the best choice there is. Whether these new players are called the third force or not, is partly in the hands of the component parties of Pakatan Rakyat.

If the matlamat is to kuburkan BN, then Pakatan  must acknowledge that it needs help to achieve this feat.
This is a divided nation, with race, language, class, religion, geography and  social history being the factors in the many divides we have here. Unless Pakatan Rakyat shows that it can fit the real needs of all the Malaysians out there, regardless of which box they may fall into, then it cannot have a chance of beating the broader reach of BN.

If Pakatan Rakyat chooses to label anyone as a third force or as a spoiler, and at the same time does not want to accommodate, accept and engage the same as their allies in the struggle to topple BN, then they have only themselves to be blamed.
If PAS and DAP, from entirely different planets in terms of ideology can work together to change things, why does Pakatan Rakyat not want to consider any other anti BN force out there as an ally ?
We cannot speak on behalf of anyone else. But we can guarantee that HRP will contest in at least 15 parliamentary and 38 state seats in the next GE. And we will do this alone, or, as part of a partnership with anyone that considers BN as their opponent , including Pakatan Rakyat. But the decision that we will contest is not negotiable, as we have nothing to lose, just like the Malaysians that we fight for.
All HRP can say is this, we can take on anyone in BN for at least 500k of the 700-800k Indian voters out there, and mind you , most of these votes will be in crucial rural constituencies where it is going to make a huge difference to Pakatan Rakyat or BN. Whether this becomes a part of the votes needed for Pakatan Rakyat to capture Putrajaya is really up to them.
Regarding the 3 questions :

To bury the ‘BN mindset’ in all of us is far more relevant  than just the mere concept of burying BN as a coalition party by itself.

Q2 : Apakah tuntutan2 utama rakyat yang anda rasa boleh membawa perubahan ke Putrajaya ?
A : I feel this question is just too wide to be covered in 3 mins. I couldn’t possibly do justice by covering it in such a short space of time. However what I do suggest is that all the political party’s secretary generals in this forum, meet up in a series of closed door sessions and iron out their differences and come up with proper solutions for all the people in this country.

Q3. Apakah perkara yang harus di tumpu atau di hindari dari sekarang jika hendak melangkah ke Putrajaya ?
A : We feel Pakatan Rakyat should mature from just being an alternative government which is aiming only to get into Putrajaya into becoming the real and caring government for all people that views long term governance.Pakatan Rakyat will have to dare to make aggressive changes that has been long due. That is moving away from the naked manipulation of Malay support (like what UMNO does) to grooming Malay support based on facts, intelligence, conscience and brotherhood of all races. Love has to be made the very base and foundation. Positive values derived from love for all is to be infused to all.
Visualize your dream for Malaysia. See the Utopia that you want, then prescribe it to the people.

The rich must help the poor, the majority must help the minority.
Sama-samalah kita kuburkanlah minda ‘BN’  dalam kalangan semua demi keadilan untuk semua dalam erti kata yang sebenarnya.

PAKATAN LOST INDIAN VOTES IN TENANG

EC announces official results:

BN - 6,699
PAS -2,992
Majority - 3,707

azlanBN's majority is 1,215 votes higher than the one it garnered at the 2008 general elections.

DAP's claim that it won 70% of Chinese votes in Tenang is based on the results from Bandar Labis Tengah, which is 95.7% Chinese. There, DAP has 69.8% share of the total votes (PAS bagged 851 votes as against BN's 365).
As for the other two Chinese-majority areas - Bandar Labis Timor (63.40% Chinese) and Labis (58.3% Chinese) - DAP is arguing that they are able to retain the Chinese votes there, but lost out on the Malay and Indian votes, resulting in PAS losing both polling districts which it won in the 2008 general election.

Tenang Indian voters: Interlok? What’s that?

LABIS: The majority of the Indian voters here are unperturbed as the Interlok debate rages, thus foiling the opposition’s bid to exploit it and win their votes.
Despite the uproar caused by the government’s move to merely amend the book amid demands that it be completely removed, many Tenang Indian voters say they will not vote based on the issue which some have described as “irrelevant”.
“Yes, I am a bit disturbed by it but I got better things to think of,” said one voter who wants to be known only as Sathia, a 32-year-old rubber tapper.
Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said yesterday that the controversial textbook would continue to be used for the literature component of Bahasa Malaysia for Form 5 in Zone 2, namely Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor and Negri Sembilan.
Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, said an independent panel would be set up to study the amendments on certain sensitive aspects of the textbook.
The controversy arose when the book, written by national laureate Abdullah Hussein, was picked by the education ministry as one of the Malay literature subjects.
Many quarters claimed the book was an insult to the Indian community as it contains sensitive words like “pariah”.

Tepid response

Pakatan Rakyat has tried hard to exploit the issue in a bid to woo Indian voters who form close to 13% of the electorate.
The attempts have been futile judging from the tepid response of the Indian voters. The majority of them interviewed by FMT said the Interlok fuss was inconsequential.
In fact, many have not heard of the book because they have not even made it to Form 5.
The poverty rate is high among the Indian electorate, with most making an average of RM450 a month working on the rubber and palm oil plantations of government-linked companies.
“So most of them are school dropouts. They are not aware of what the whole Interlok issue is all about,” said Klang DAP parliamentarian Charles Santiago who is helping out in the Pakatan campaign.
A brief visit to the plantation sites shows the dire conditions of the Indians. Some of the houses have no clean water and electricity and the furniture is mostly recycled ones.
This is in stark contrast to the Malay residents in Felda settlements close to the Indian plantation housing estates. Malay Felda settlers here make a minimum income of RM3,000 a month.
“We want a representative who can help us tackle poverty issues, not Interlok,” said Sathia, who can still afford to smile despite his hardship

Perkasa: ‘Immoral’ to amend, withdraw Interlok

PETALING JAYA: Pressure group Perkasa is against amending the Interlok novel, calling the decision unfortunate for the writer and the Malay race.
According to Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali, it would be best to withdraw the book and replace it with another, instead of making changes to a work penned four decades ago.
“If there is a need to withdraw the book for the purpose of racial unity, then withdraw it. Perkasa believes that if the book is replaced with another on grounds of racial unity instead of political interests, it will be accepted by all,” he said.
“This is not a school textbook which is found to contain errors, this is the labour of one man, and it is wrong and immoral to make changes without the consent of the author. It’s a violation,” he added.
However, Hassan said that if the author agreed to the amendments, Perkasa would feel ashamed for the entire Malay race.
The Perkasa leader was responding to Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement yesterday that the book would be amended and then introduced in schools.
Indian groups, including MIC, protested against the book being used as a component for the Malay literature subject as it contained inaccurate and disaparaging remarks about the community.

‘Know your history’

Meanwhile, Hassan said that Interlok, penned by national laureate Abdullah Hussain in 1971, did not intend to belittle any particular race.
“The word ‘pariah’ or the ‘pariah’ caste is still there. Since back then, those from this caste were brought to Tanah Melayu to work on the estates owned by the British.
“They can no longer be called ‘pariah’ because they are far better (economically) than those from their caste back in India then and now,” he said.
“And if the ‘pariah’ caste still exists, it was because of the labelling of the Indian community itself and not by any other race.
“Those here cannot be called ‘pariah’ because they are (economically) better off. It is different if the rich Indians call their poorer counterparts (by that name),” he added.
The Perkasa leader said that Indian youths must know the history of the caste system and the mention of it in history books or writings was not done with the intention to offend.
“Will Hindraf and MIC abolish the word ‘pariah’? Previously, the late (MIC vice-president and later IPF president) MG Pandithan admitted to being from the caste and was sacked from MIC for all sorts of reasons.
“There are also Indians here who admit to being from that caste. History cannot be erased just like how the history of pirates becoming sultans cannot be erased; this was also mentioned in school books and the sultans never got upset about it,” he said.
After the Interlok controversy erupted, Perkasa had conferred an award on the author.

‘What will Umno lose by banning Interlok?’

KUALA LUMPUR: Over 200 non-governmental organisations have banded together to form the National Interlok Action Team (NIAT) to urge the government to withdraw the book from the secondary school compulsory reading list.
NIAT council member, A Rajaretnam, said that the new coalition, under the leadership of Mohammad Haji Tasleem, was founded on the premise that the Interlok novel cannot, under any circumstances, be used as an educational material in schools.
He said that the book has to be withdrawn from schools with immediate effect and replaced with other books from the other zones.
He also said that all the negotiations on the amendments to Interlok were secondary and subject to approval by the Indian community.
“We will have a nationwide forum to explain to the people about the real issue in the book,” he told FMT after last night’s emergency meeting which saw more than 200 NGOs in attendance.
Rajaretnam said that there was no plausible reason why the government cannot remove the book from the list of compulsory readings in school.
“We want to know what has Umno got to lose if the book is removed and banned. The book is hurting us, not them (Umno),” he said.
Rajaretnam also chastised the government for seeking only MIC views and not taking the issue directly to the people.
“He (Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin) can refer to MIC which secretly supports the book, but do not forget that at some point the government will still have to come back to us for votes. We will remember this,” he said.
On NIAT’s next move now that Muhyiddin has declared that the book stays on the authorised list of reading material, Rajaretnam said that a hunger strike would be held in Brickfield on Sunday.
He said that some 50 university students and youths would take part in the one-day strike.

Inept MIC

Meanwhile, an MIC member today hammered the party for its poor handling of the issue.
Calling MIC a “traitor to Indians”, the source said that the party leadership, the Education Ministry and the Cabinet had already decided to only remove the word “pariah” and keep the book.
“It’s all a drama… they have already decided to remove the ‘pariah’ word from Interlok. They (government and MIC) had no plans to ban the book.
“This is MIC manipulating the situation. It played along with Umno to divert the community’s attention from the other hidden issue in the book.
“We think the federal government directed the school to use the novel as literature book although it is aware that it was a derogatory depiction of the Indian community,” the member, who did not want to be named, he said.
He said that the real issue within Interlok was not the word “pariah” but the “idea and nuances” perpetuated by the book’s content.
“The whole ‘pariah’ word issue is simply a distraction. If you read the book, you will understand that the book aims to stress the fact that Chinese and Indians came to this country as immigrants searching for a life which was better that their homeland.
“Life was hard for them back home. In contrast, Malaya was paradise. So don’t question Malay rights and privileges.
“Interlok simply wants the Chinese and Indians to accept their lot and be thankful to the Malays,” he said.
Noting that he had been an MIC member for 30 years, the MIC member said that he was grossly embarrassed by how MIC had handled the controversial issue.
Meanwhile, the Interlok controversy is not over yet with an NGO planning to step up protest. The World Tamil Preservation Society says it will burn copies of the Interlok book in front of the Subramaniam temple in Labis at 6pm today

Interlok retention condemned

PETALING JAYA: Various groups have condemned the government decision to retain the novel Interlok as a Malay literature text in schools, and their anger is directed mostly at Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Education Minister.
Klang MP Charles Santiago called it a “slap” on the face of Malaysian Indians and accused Muhyiddin of pandering to ultra-Malays to win votes in the Tenang by-election.
Muhyiddin, who announced the government decision today, said there would be amendments to the Abdullah Hussain novel to avoid hurt to Indian sentiments. Many groups are offended by what they describe as the novel’s stereotyped and misleading characterisation of Indians in Malaysia.
“He is pandering to the conservatives within Umno to secure his position in the party at the expense of the Indian community,” said Santiago.
This morning, Santiago led a group of 25 people representing non-governmental organisations and opposition parties to the Tenang police station, where they lodged a police report against the Education Minister and demanded complete withdrawal of the novel from schools.

Government misled?

The International Movement for the Preservation of Tamils, one of the NGOs, said it would hold a special prayer tomorrow in response to the Muhyiddin’s announcement.
“We will hold the prayer in Subramaniyar temple in Labis,” said the group’s public relations officer R Suresh Kumar.
He urged MIC to condemn the decision, saying this was the best time for the party to prove its mettle.
“If the MIC president has any clout in BN, he should act now,” he said.
The chairman of the Coalition of Malaysian Indian NGOs, A Vaithilingam, said the decision went against the government’s 1Malaysia campaign.
“I believe the government has been misled,” he said.
The Malaysian Indian Business Association also condemned the decision, with its president P Sivakumar arguing against the establishment of another panel to amend the novel.
He added that the Indian community’s view on the matter was very clear.

“The book should be taken out from schools,”said Sivakumar, who warned that the Indians may punish the ruling government for this in the next polls.

P Uthayakumar, the secretary-general of the Human Rights Party, meanwhile said he would respond only after seeing the amendments to the novel.

Kavyan welcomes it

However Kavyan Writers Association welcomed Muhyiddin’s decision to retain Interlok with necessary amendments.
“The decision is proof that the government is willing to listen to the plight and voices of the Indians,” said its president Uthaya Sankar SB.
He also reiterated the association’s stand that it was the Education Ministry and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka(DBP) that should take the blame, instead of National Laureate Abdullah Hussain since the copyright for the students’ edition was held by DBP.

Interlok...Cabinet decided to move on

Nothing much can be done about the book Interlok because the Indians in Malaysia have no voice and not united enough. The MIC leaders are simply not capable of convincing the BN goverment to withdraw the book from being the compulsory text book for Form 5 and SPM exam.
If Indians eat sireh like goats, Malays eat ferns like camels. If Indians are pariah, malays are incestors. If Indians came by steamship, malays came by perahus. But Indians did not grab the land and drive the orang Asli into the deep jungle.
The only way to set this and other things right is for all non malays to vote against BN in all elections. Get BN out of federal government. But are our Indians willing to save own face and Integrity? If we need HINDRAF 2 to wake us up for TSUNAMI 2, IT MEANS WE ARE SLEEPING!
Do not blame others if we fail to do our part. Be proud to be called PARIA.
